Just because a coin is old, does not make it rare, but old coins in Mint State are different. Queen Victoria sovereigns are a perfect example. These coins are very popular with buyers because of their history. Struck from 1838 though to 1901 there are several different Types, including: young head, empress, jubilee and window or veiled head.
However, of the more than sixty years the coins were made, just a handful of dates could be considered rare in anything other than mint state. When buying coins of this type you should ask yourself, just how much value at risk are you willing to accept? If you are paying £400 for a £200 melt coin, do you really desire it at that price? If the answer is yes, then buy it and do not look back. If not, move on and another may come along at a premium you can tolerate.
