Wow. As many know we were a big force in the Carson City mint coins, making the market in most dates. Back in 2004 any CC mint coin would one way or another pass through our hands, and one of them I will never forget.
The Carson City mint opened for business in 1870, primarily to process the silver coming from the legendary Comstock lode. That first year of production remains one of the most interesting years.
According to the records, around 3,000 $20 Liberty Double eagles were struck. However, according to legend, the stage coach carrying that years mintage was attacked and robbed of the entre mintage. Few know who or what happened, but the fact is just a handful of coins survived from 1870.
