US Mint reports $ million theft of $1 coin errors

E-mail

Coin World is reporting that a US Mint police officer has been arrested for theft. According to the report, an officer began stealing “error” coins, which can be highly desired by collectors, in 2007. The coins taken did not have engraved edges, and were sold by the officer for between $20 and $75.

Along with the charges of theft, he has also been charged with under stating income tax by more than $800 thousand.

Presuming that money came from the sale of the coins, he must have walked out of the mint facility with over $10,000 in coins between 2007 and 2011, that is around twelve one dollar coins every single day of the year for four years.

Crikey, just how lax is security?
